Mercer Street Project

Feet First supports Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata’s proposal to redirect $43 million bond allocated to the Mercer Project to building new sidewalks in Seattle, funding the Bicycle Master Plan, Pedestrian Master Plan and providing long-term capital program for meeting our freight mobility needs.

From the $43 million dollars, pedestrian improvements totaling $30 million are suggested to designated to sidewalks and other pedestrian improvements that may be outlined in the future Pedestrian Master Plan.

The Pedestrian Master Plan is anticipated to be adopted in the spring of 2009, and will identify comprehensive pedestrian improvements to encourage people to walk. Over 400 people are hit by vehicles a year in Seattle. There are many tools that would significantly lower this rate.

Current funding for the Pedestrian Master Plan implementation is closer to $10 million, yet the need is far beyond what $10 million can get Seattleites.

In Seattle, there are 12,262 block faces lacking sidewalks, and it would take $1 billion dollars to build (block equivalents or ‘faces’ are equal to one side of the block with out sidewalks). A $20 million dollar infusion would allow us to address more priority areas in more neighborhoods.

Let your council members know where you would like $43 million dollars of the Mercer Street Project to be allocated: towards pedestrian needs across Seattle.
